Conceptualists vs. Experimentalists

Posted by : E.v.R. | On : July 20, 2006

Wired has a neat article on genius by Daniel Pink. It breaks it into two types, conceptualists vs. experimentalists.

Genius is nebulous at best, and an often over-used term. But if I had to choose whether I was a conceptualist thinker or an experimentalist (let’s ignore the genius part), I’d say conceptualist. I don’t think the two types are mutually exclusive however. I play both ways at times, though I lean more heavily to the conceptual side.

Which type are you?

Oh, I’m just a genius. Feel free to peg me under the conceptualist or experimentalist category, I won’t mind :)

Yeah, me too. Regular plain old genius is fine with me. *Ahem*

But the point of interest for me was the distinction between mindsets. You could remove the word ‘genius’ entirely from the equation. The article should be titled, “What kind of thinker are you?” Admittedly, that wouldn’t grab peoples’ attention as well.

Conceptualist to the end. I think everything through. If you saw my notebook before I ever start writing a word… Yeah it’s a no brainer :D I’m a big time conceptualist.

I’m with ya… The times I’m more of an experimentalist, it’s in the name of conceptualism!
