The Reading Queue for July 25th, 2006

Posted by : E.v.R. | On : July 25, 2006

If you’re anything like me, you’re a media whore. An extreme term to be sure, but I can’t think of anything more fitting to describe my love of books, movies, and games.

I love to spend time with my media, as funny as that sounds. I will often sit amongst the stockpiled books I’ve been saving for that nuclear holocaust when the only way to pass the time will be to churn through mountains of reading material.

I often browse my reading stockpile, and pick out five or so books that I want to read over the next month or two–a kind of ‘reading selections’ or ‘reading queue.’

Here is what’s in my queue:

The Main Enemy

I often make selections based on what I’ve been thinking about lately, or my ‘mood.’ I wanted to read more about the CIA, which is why I picked The Main Enemy and The Great Game. I also wanted to diversify and catch up on some sci-fi, hence the Bear, Heinlein, and Van Vogt.

What’s in your reading queue?

I’m actually reading fiction for once! I’ve just started Fatherland, an alternate-future thriller where the Germans won WW2.

Also working on How To Win Friends And Influence People, which is as close to the Official Guide to Success, Love and Happiness in Life as I’ve ever seen.

And I’m very excited to soon start on The Art of Money-Getting by P.T. Barnum, who’s one of my personal heroes.

My list of books to read is longer than my arm, I think. So much to read, so little time (and money to buy the books I want).

    Jim,

Yeah my Amazon Wishlist is about 10 pages long. I think it got worse when they started allowing multiple lists for different categories of books.

I always buy more than I can possibly read at a given time, because I love to have that wide selection available at home so I can grab whatever I feel like reading.

The only fiction piece on my desk is Peter Carey’s new book, Theft, which hasn’t captured me the way many of his books have.

So, that and a lot of non-fiction, and I’m probably going to find some Turkish folklore to finish out the summer with.

Turkish folklore? Just out of curiosity, what led you to that?

Is that like me and native Mexican mythology? Peoples’ interests are interesting. :)
