Even outside of NaNo I can force myself into little writing spurts. The only time putting words to the page helps is if those words forward the story. When they don't, then I'm no better off for writing them. This is one of the things that has set me off on the quest for the perfect plotting tools. It may be an erroneous quest for the holy grail, and I realize I probably won't find what I'm looking for... but I have to try, and it's what I discover along the way that makes it worthwhile.
