			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In most of my experiences inside and outside the topic of writing there is a universal truth I have discovered, that is proven time and time again. I&#8217;m just going to get this out of the way so here it is; Procrastination is caused by indecision. </p>
<p>In essence procrastination is not just a lack of action, but also a lack of decision making. Closer to the root of the problem, it is a <em>lack of desire</em> to make a decision. You&#8217;re not sure what to do with a character in a scene, or how the plot twist will unfold. So you get out the mop or do the dishes, or watch a movie, or play a game. </p>
<p><span id="more-425"></span></p>
<p>There is nothing wrong with doing any of those things, and in fact maybe it&#8217;s good that you do because you will quicker realize that the tricky problem that was waiting for you on your story is still there and as long as you avoid it, there is nothing you can do and you will never finish your story.</p>
<p>The more decisions you face up to and make, the less likely you will be to procrastinate. You often see evidence of this after the fact. Once you roll up your sleeves and get down to work, you think to yourself, <em>&#8220;Hey that wasn&#8217;t as bad as I thought it was going to be. What was I so hung up about?&#8221;</em></p>
<p>Making a decision. That&#8217;s what you had hang-ups about.</p>
<p>I have a very apt day-to-day household corollary (coronary?) for this one. When guests are coming over I often have a bad tendency to just shove things in drawers and closets, and worry about what these items are and where they should ideally be (in the garbage, most of em&#8217;) at a much later point in time. But then be it six, or eight months, or a year later I&#8217;m digging in the closet and I realize that all this drawer and closet-stuffing means I just need to clean the closet. Wherever you go, there it is.</p>
<p>The fundamental issue is that every article or item requires a decision and sometimes I feel overwhelmed and that there are just too many decisions to be made and I just don&#8217;t have the time or inclination to make them all.</p>
<p>Until I just go and make 10 decisions and realize the boogeyman doesn&#8217;t really exist and sooner, rather than later, is probably better. And all of you out there struggling to write know exactly what I&#8217;m talking about! :)</p>
<p>Stories get made a decision at a time. So get busy making a decision or ten. The more decisions the better, and the faster you&#8217;ll get the job done. Nobody ever finished a novel or screenplay by refusing to make decisions.</p>
<p>So get on with it!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I&#8217;m having trouble with secondary plot points. I usually know what my highlights are. The big moments. The beginning, the high notes through the middle, and the big finale. My problem is with the things the character has to do in order to complete the journey, the build up to the final showdown.</p>
<p>My problem is I like to get to the point. I guess that&#8217;s better than the opposite problem of forever meandering. The point I&#8217;m at in my story, if I just go to the part I know next, the story will be over. I need to think of some built-up obstacles that the hero encounters before he can confront the villains. Right now I&#8217;m struggling with that.</p>
<p>It also seems that everyone handles this differently. I&#8217;ve been reading some Richard Stark and Mickey Spillane lately, and their solution seems to be a complication to the plot. For example, the hero finds out where the villain&#8217;s hotel is, and goes to stake out the hotel. The hero breaks into the villain&#8217;s room only to discover the villain has moved out.</p>
<p>I need to build my chops at these kinds of complications, because my gut instinct is that these are always shallow contrivances and I&#8217;d rather get on with the bits of real storytelling. But these contrived complications are often an integral part of building the plot, and sometimes critical.</p>
<p>Do you have troubles with secondary plot points? Any tricks or tips you use?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Tabula Rasa or <em>&#8220;Blank Slate&#8221;</em> has been with us for some two thousand years. It was first proposed Aristotle, and later expanded upon by Thomas Aquinas, and eventually John Locke. It originally applied to the idea of the mind or soul. The idea is that we are born completely blank and we are free to shape our individuality however we want. Or as some interpretations have it, we are shaped by our parents or others who wish to mold us.</p>
<p>The problem with the Tabula Rasa theory is that it&#8217;s false. We now know that each individual is shaped by a combination of genes and their environment. We are not born &#8216;blank,&#8217; but with some predetermined individuality, personality, quirks and oddities of the mind. As we grow up, things in our environment have an impact on us, and we react.</p>
<p>Our reactions are partly our personality, and that personality is partly shaped by our genes. Some of our reaction might be dicated by whether or not we ate Cheerios for breakfast or woke up on the wrong side of the bed. There is both a huge genetic framework in play, and also lots of factors from our environment. Our genes themselves exercise their &#8216;will&#8217; (<a href="http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/anthropomorphism">anthropomorphism</a> is also a popular misconception) through what is called phenotypic expression. </p>
<p>Pop culture&#8217;s understanding of genetics is pretty flawed, as you often read articles about a &#8216;gene for this&#8217; or a &#8216;gene for that.&#8217; It is a popular misconception, that there is a <em>&#8220;gene for blue eyes&#8221;</em> or a <em>&#8220;gene for being gay.&#8221;</em> </p>
<p>First it should be pointed out that features are not always caused by a single gene, but several genes that interact with one another. Second, the features we usually ascribe to genes are usually just phenotypic expressions of those genes. This is a little hard to explain, but there is a common equation that goes like this:</p>
<p>Gene + environment = phenotype.</p>
<p>I can&#8217;t help but think of the colors of a cat&#8217;s fur.  The range of colors a cat might have is determined by the genes, but the actual colors it is born with are the phenotypic expression. What most people don&#8217;t realize is that a cat&#8217;s fur pattern is determined in the womb (environment). </p>
<p>So the genes might say &#8220;the fur might be coarse, and color might be somewhere between white and orange&#8221; and in the womb, an orange and white fur pattern develops and the cat looks like the 9 Lives cat food mascot, Morris. </p>
<p>You can see from this example, that  we have what pop journalism would call a &#8216;gene for the Morris fur pattern.&#8217; This is where most popular articles and reporting on the subject of genetics get it completely wrong. </p>
<p>It is not a gene for the Morris fur pattern. It is a gene for fur somewhere between orange and white, and the way the pattern develops in the womb just happens to spawn a little kitten with a fur pattern that looks like Morris. </p>
<p>That fur pattern is the phenotypic expression of the &#8220;orange-to-white&#8221; gene. It&#8217;s one pattern, from a wide variety of possible patterns. It is <em>one permutation.</em> And that&#8217;s all the phenotypic expression is. It&#8217;s one permutation, or one pattern, from a wide range of possibilities. </p>
<p>That orange-white color scheme might just as easily form in the womb as solid white and solid orange patches, creating a cat that somebody will eventually name &#8220;Patches.&#8221; Or by some fluke the orange gets minimized and the cat comes out mostly white, with a few odd or hidden orange spots.</p>
<p>This is why even if you clone a cat, it may be the same cat in personality, and possibly color, but the fur pattern will be different. </p>
<p>By now you&#8217;re probably asking yourself, &#8220;What does this have to do with writing?&#8221; I&#8217;m getting to that point, just bear with me a little bit longer.</p>
<p>One of the unfortunate byproducts of the Tabula Rasa theory is that it has held popularity in the 20th and even 21st Century. To this day, people still believe that individuals are born &#8216;blank&#8217; like empty vessels, ready to be molded. This misconception is so strong that it has many authors and intellectuals concerned for public awareness on the topic. </p>
<p>Evolutionary psychologist <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Pinker">Steven Pinker</a> even wrote a book dedicated to the topic, aptly titled <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=as2&#038;path=ASIN/0142003344&#038;tag=redchurch-20&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325">Blank Slate</a>. As evolutionary psychology would have it, our minds are the product of our genes, our environment, and millions of years of evolution. In other words, there is no blank slate, and there never could be.</p>
<p>How does this apply to creativity or writing?</p>
<p>Much like the popular misconception that people start as a blank slate, it is often assumed or even taught that all forms of creativity start as a blank slate. When you sit down to write a novel, you are staring at a blank page, and you must spontaneously create something out of nothing. When a painter primes a fresh canvas, they too must magically evoke something out of nothing.</p>
<p>But here&#8217;s the key, where the misconception lies. You can&#8217;t paint a masterpiece, or write a novel, out of nothing. For one you need the physical ingredients, such as paint or a computer. Then you need the mental ingredients, which are ideas or thoughts. Just like the keyboard or the paint brushes don&#8217;t appear out of nowhere, the thoughts and ideas don&#8217;t appear out of nowhere either. You either already had them, or something inspired you to have them. They came from somewhere. It&#8217;s an evolutionary, organic process, one that I talked about a while back in a post called <a href="http://www.redchurch.com/quantum/2006/05/04/visualization-growing-a-story/">Visualization &#038; Growing a Story</a>.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the thing; <em>Most writers block is created by the Myth of Tabula Rasa.</em> People get stuck because they think they&#8217;re supposed to spawn something out of nothing. We stare at the <em>blank pages,</em> the <em>blank canvases,</em> and we become overwhelmed with the enormous &#8216;magical&#8217; task of simply making something appear. We take upon ourselves the burden of being wizards and magicians. We must make something appear in a puff of smoke, or like pulling a rabbit from a hat. And when we can&#8217;t do this, we say to ourselves, <em>&#8220;Well, my magic must be a little weak today.&#8221;</em></p>
<p>But it&#8217;s not magic! It never was, and never will be! Creativity doesn&#8217;t just magically appear. A masterpiece doesn&#8217;t just magically appear. It might take years of work, and trying out different ideas. And those ideas don&#8217;t magically appear either. They come from our experiences and our inspirations. Inspiration itself, is not magical. </p>
<p>We watch a movie, read a book, or have a conversation with a friend. In the course of that we become fixated on some idea, something we like. Some piece of substance that we find fascinating. We hold onto it. We digest it. As we do other things, we begin to notice this idea in other places. In other books, in other movies. We follow this idea around, and see where it appears. We think about the true nature of this pet concept, and why we think it&#8217;s so cool. When it comes time to be creative, we put our own twist on the idea, we create our own interpretation. We find new or unexpressed things, and we express them.</p>
<p>That idea is like a gene. The big wide world of books, movies, television, and video games is one environment. When we create, we discover our own phenotypic expression of that idea. In the 1970s somebody even gave a name to notion that ideas were like genes. His name was Richard Dawkins and he called it a meme. Memes, he hypothesized, are the idea equivalent of genes. Ideas act like genes too. The strong ones surive and propogate. Ideas evolve just like genes do. They change over time, in response to their environment.</p>
<p>The point here is that we never really start with nothing. We always start with a seed, or a little DNA of our ideas and concepts. This idea evolves and grows. It may have brothers or sisters out there on the bookshelves, but this version of the idea is ours because we make it ours. The DNA of our ideas is shaped, interestingly enough, by our own DNA. It is shaped by our own DNA that exists in the form of our unique personalities and our unique minds.</p>
<p>Does this suggest that ideas are alive? In the physical sense, no. In the metaphorical sense, yes. Or you could think of ideas like a virus. Is a virus an animal? Not really. Does it &#8216;live&#8217; in the sense that it sustains itself, copies, or duplicates itself? Yes.</p>
<p>What does this mean for creativity?</p>
<p>The next time you are blocked, or find yourself intimidated when starting a new creative piece because you&#8217;re &#8216;blank&#8217; or staring at the &#8216;blank page,&#8217; remember, the page is never blank. Your mind is never blank. You&#8217;re not expected to create something out of nothing, because that&#8217;s just not how creativity works. </p>
<p>Don&#8217;t let the myth of the Tabula Rasa threaten your creativity. Creativity always starts somewhere, with a seed, or an idea. If you don&#8217;t have any ideas, it just means you need to find some. Finding an idea somewhere is easier than performing a feat of magic, isn&#8217;t it? Finding a starting point is easier than making a novel spontaneously appear, isn&#8217;t it? All you need is a starting point. With a starting point, you simply grow from there.</p>
<p>You&#8217;re not a blank slate, and your work is not blank either. Find a seed, plant it, water it, nurture it, and grow it. You just might find that creativity isn&#8217;t so difficult as everyone would have you believe.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Why do some stories have suspense, and others don&#8217;t?</p>
<p>In her book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=as2&#038;path=ASIN/1880284626&#038;tag=redchurch-20&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325">How To Write KILLER Fiction</a>, Carolyn Wheat explains what she calls The Four Outcomes:</p>
<blockquote><p>A character wants something, something concrete in the here-and-now. Will he get it? There are four possible outcomes: &#8220;Yes,&#8221; &#8220;No,&#8221; &#8220;No, and furthermore,&#8221; and &#8220;Yes, but.&#8221; The first two outcomes do absolutely nothing to move the plot.</p>
<p>The &#8220;no, and furthermore&#8221; answer is one of the two outcomes that will move the story and fill the middle of your suspense novel with every-deepening complications. Whatever your characters do in the middle of the book should not only fail, it should fail in such a way that it makes their situations actively worse than they were before.</p>
<p>The most interesting use of the &#8220;yes, but&#8221; outcome is the &#8220;yes&#8221; with a hidden &#8220;but.&#8221; Our hero gladly accepts the &#8220;yes&#8221; part of the answer, and settles down in the comfortable belief that he&#8217;s being helped. And then, when he least expects it, the hidden &#8220;but&#8221; pops up&#8211;and the hero is plunged into distrust and danger once again.</p></blockquote>
<p>I found this explanation satisfying as it explains why simple yes-no answers to conflict are never very dramatic or moving within a work. The protagonist should never get exactly what they want, or if they do there should be a serious catch to complicate matters. The writer is very much the designer of an obstacle course that the hero must get through.</p>
<p>My entry into the game industry was as a level designer, so I very much understand this kind of &#8216;design&#8217; in writing. But it&#8217;s also the hardest part. Coming up with puzzles, tricks and traps, &#8220;but&#8221;s and &#8220;furthermore&#8221;s is a lot of hard work.</p>
<p>If your hero is accomplishing things too easily, then at least you know you&#8217;ve got a problem. Make it more challenging! </p>
<p>Some also frame this technique by asking the question; &#8220;What&#8217;s the worst thing that could possibly happen to the main characters at this point in the story?&#8221; Keep in mind, however, that it&#8217;s not just about beating your characters down. Half of the technique is in developing the response your characters will have. For every action there is reaction, and thus conflict. And where there is conflict, lay the seeds of suspense.</p>
<p><em>&#8220;What happens next?&#8221;</em></p>
<p>In my experiences writing, this is one of the hardest questions to answer. But it&#8217;s really not so hard. I&#8217;ve often found that I&#8217;m making a mountain out of a molehill when I get stuck on this problem. It&#8217;s not hard to think of Worst Case Scenarios to put your characters in. You can always go back and change them at a later date, the point is to shut the internal critic up and just establish a baseline of plot points so you have something to work with.</p>
<p>When in doubt, create conflict.</p>

Unlike low-energy block, high-energy block may worsen as your deadline approaches; it makes you sweat, makes you sit down only to jump up again. When your work is part of who you are, and you fear that it is bad, you become more and more frantic. Perhaps you have ideas, but you quickly reject them as worthless. Perhaps you do not even let them into your consciousness, but feel them swelling, purulent&#8211;an abscess where your brain used to be. In low-energy block, the desire that makes you sit down to write is a dull sense of guilt. Instead of ideas, you only have sterile ruminations on how things used to be when you could write, when the world had color.</p></blockquote>
<p>Before this I hadn&#8217;t even considered that there could be different types of block. To me, block was block. My block is totally high-energy. I can&#8217;t sit still, I get distracted easily. The more energy I have, the harder it is for me to focus. </p>
<p>Although self-diagnosis is often completely inaccurate, I consider myself to be somewhat hypomanic. A brief time spent in therapy during 2001 seems to have confirmed this. My &#8216;depressions&#8217; are not so much depression in the classical sense, but slumps caused by anxiety or negatively spent excess energy. I can be a little obsessive/compulsive at times, and so most of my writer&#8217;s block is the high energy variety. </p>
<p>Fascinating enough, writer&#8217;s block is also linked to the frontal lobe of the brain, which, not-so-coincidentally is also responsible for higher order logic and planning. Those with low-energy block (depression) have lessened activity in the frontal lobe. Those with high-energy block, such as myself, are reigned under control by structure, routine and planning. </p>
<p>This perfectly explains my love for structure. It makes me feel safe and calm from my own irrational energies. I know that if I have a good plot, for example, all I need to do is sit back and write. It also highlights the most frustrating part of writing and writer&#8217;s block for me&#8211;when the ideas and excitement are so high that I&#8217;m almost fundamentally incapable of sitting down and getting anything done. This happens a lot actually&#8230; and while some might call that a blessing, at times I think it is a curse. </p>
<p>I am more of a hypergraphia kind of person. I can write lengthy blog posts such as this one, rambling forum posts, emails, etc. But when I sit down and stare at my novel, the energy begins to boil in a fury that threatens to choke me.</p>
<p>Solution to a low-energy writer&#8217;s block involves getting yourself excited. Arouse yourself&#8211;find more energy. Solution to a high-energy block is, ironically, to be less aroused. Lessen the excitement and energy somehow. Maybe I need to take up meditation? Whatever helps me focus I guess&#8230;</p>
